What is Hemp Fiber & Yarn?

Hemp fibre is naturally one of the most environmentally friendly fibres and also the oldest. It is called a fibre of hundred uses. Hemp is a bast fibre plant similar to Flax, Kenaf, Jute, and Ramie. • Dark tan and brown natural colour. Difficult to bleach, but it can be dyed with bright and dark colours.

  • Lustrous feel, provides warmth and softness just like other natural fibres. Hemp garments are very soft, hold their shape, resist fading, and get softer with time.

  • Higher tensile strength and durability than cotton. Clothes made from hemp are 10 times stronger than cotton. It is the most durable natural fibre.

  • Better moisture absorption than cotton.

  • High UV protection capability.

  • Adaptability to weather conditions. Hemp made garments will keep you warmer in winter and cooler in the summer season. It is very breathable and has excellent insulation properties.

  • Naturally absorbent to reactive dyes, vat dyes and sulphuric dyes.

  • Hemp fabrics are less prone to fading than cotton fabrics.

Like Cotton, Hemp can be blended with other natural and man made fibre and yarns to make a variety of fabrics, including high-quality linen. When blended with materials such as cotton, linen, and silk, the resulting fabric is sturdier and longer lasting, while maintaining quality and soft feel.

Uses of Hemp Fiber & Yarn

As Hemp is not pliable and elastic, it cannot be woven into fine fabrics. Given this, it is mainly used in home textile applications such as rugs and carpet manufacturing. It is especially suitable for ship cordage as it is not weakened or rotted by water.

Coarse Hemp fibres and yarns are woven into cordage, rope, sacking and heavy –duty tarpaulins. Finer Hemp fibres are used for interior design and apparel fabrics. Hemp is used in making tapestry, hats, shawls, rugs, posters/canvas, and towels. There are a number of fashion brands today that are using hemp blended (with cotton, polyester) clothes wear.

A number of fashion brands globally are incorporating hemp fabric into their apparel wear. This is mainly due to hemp being less impactful on the environment in comparison to conventional fabrics such as cotton and polyester. Here is why hemp is considered an environmentally sustainable material for textile products –

  • Hemp does not need any toxic chemicals such as pesticides and fertilisers to grow, making it naturally organic. No use of pesticides and fertilisers during its growth means it’s cultivation does no harm to the environment.

  • Requires 3 times as less water to grow than cotton. What’s more, sometimes water received from rainfall is sufficient, hemp can grow without the need of any extra inputs of water.

  • The hemp plant returns 60 - 70% of the nutrients it takes. It purifies the soil and it’s deep roots prevent erosion.

  • Hemp grows very quickly, requires half the land for cultivation in comparison to cotton, and yields much more fibres than cotton on the same amount of soil, up to 220% more than cotton!

  • Due to its fast growth, hemp can renew up to  times per year, making it the most sustainable plant.

  • Hemp is a completely natural material, and entirely biodegradable. Textile products made out of hemp therefore have the lowest footprint, and leave a minimal impact on the environment.
